چکیده

The single crystal Cu-Al-Ni alloys became generally commercialized. It can be observed that response time of any single crystal Cu-Al-Ni-based shape memory alloy (SMA) actuator is greater than the necessary when it is used for human prosthesis. Moreover, the electrical SMA actuator type with better performance than the thermal one is very problematic for this type of crystal due to its low electrical resistance. However, the construction of thermal single crystal Cu-Al-Ni-based SMA actuator can be improved to reduce this disadvantage when compared to the famous Ni-Ti SMA alloy. As option to reduce the time of response of single crystal Cu-Al-Ni-based SMA the heating procedure was developed and tested. To elaborate the heating conditions, the chemical composition of martensitic and austenitic single crystals, Cu-Al-Ni alloy samples were examined. The executed experiments clearly demonstrated the advantage of the preheating phase. The response time of the SMA prototype actuator was reduced to considerably adequate values when compared to those usually used as actuators in human prosthesis .

Characterization of Constrained Aged Niti Strips for Using In Artificial Muscle Actuators (Technical Note)

Marvelous bending/straightening effects of two-way shape memory alloy (TWSMA) help their employment in design and manufacturing of new medical appliances. Constrained ageing with bending load scheme can induce two-way shape memory effect (TWSME). Scanning electron microscope (SEM) analysis, electrical resistivity measurement (ERM) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) are employed to dete...

To Design a Small Pneumatic Actuator Driven Parallel Link Mechanism for Shoulder Prostheses for Daily Living Use

Only in Japan, there are about 82,000 upper limb amputees (Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare, 2005). Using upper limb prostheses could restore the function for them, thus improve significantly the quality of their activities of daily living [ADL]. Compared with below-elbow prostheses, shoulder prostheses are left behind in their development, due to high degrees of freedom [DOF] required, w...

On the Desing and Test of a Prototype of Biped Actuated by Shape Memory Alloys

In this paper the design of a biped robot actuated with Shape Memory Alloy (SMA) springs with minimum degrees of freedom is presented. SMA springs are a class of smart materials that are known for their high power to mass and volume ratios. It was shown that utilizing spring type of SMAs have many advantages as large deformation, smooth motion, silent and clean movement compared to ordinary typ...

Introducing an Invention: Puzzle Shaped Cast for Upper Limb Fractures

Upper limb fractures are prevalent injuries. An essential element of fracture healing is to maintain the bones alignment. However there are lots of complications associated with traditional ways of treatment, such as compartment syndrome and stiffness due to immobility for long time. Also evaluation and observation of the limb under the casts for potential infections and skin issues are n...

Designing and testing lightweight shoulder prostheses with hybrid actuators for movements involved in typical activities of daily living and impact absorption

Unlike forearm amputees, transhumeral amputees have residual stumps that are too small to provide a sufficient range of operation for their prosthetic parts to perform usual activities of daily living. Furthermore, it is difficult for small residual stumps to provide sufficient impact absorption for safe manipulation in daily living, as intact arms do. Therefore, substitution of upper limb func...
